Rating: - A very, very useful book
It's about time that we have a book/audiobook that understands the deep psychological issues of why so many of us have such a hard time managing our finances. So many financial planners and experts only tell us what we should be doing and that is fine, but nobody wants to go deeper into understanding why so few follow the advice. The first two tapes were the most helpful for me. For many who do have negative experiences about money going back to childhood, these are the only tapes out of the 8 tapes you will need. And it's also nice to have somebody explain to me what an annuity is (in full detail) and give me basic information on how to handle marriages, divorces, deaths, etc.,etc. And the fact that she openly admits to making various financial mistakes in her past is also helpful as well. Even, if at times, her tape seems wishy-washy and overly sentimental, the fact that she speaks from personal experience and the fact that she uses real-life experiences of her clients to illustrate her points takes the condenscending attitude out of her advice which seems to riddle the advice given by other financial advisors. And people wonder why she has caused should a stir? All I have to say is that I found her audiobook very useful and informative.
Rating: - A guide to financial responsible behavior
I especially liked the first section, acts of courage. Even if you financial life isn't in disarray, and if the amount of dept you have is very limited, there is much emotional intelligence in this section, and its messages are worth thinking about: The author shows how negative emotions as shame, guilt, fear and anger influence bad financial decisions, she shows how negative thoughs and words, in combination with lack of goal oriented thinking may stop us from achieving what we want. She shows how material clutter doesn't do much good neither and hert advice to walk through your house and look for items you do not longer use and other stuff that is "just filling closets" is something that too many people suffer from. Just applying this first section might pay back for the book.As for section 2, marketeers won't be happy, but some of the advice is well worth considering. For instance, an exercise in Chapter 4 makes you consider this as: "How much money would you save if you drove your car one extra year? And waited one more year to upgrade your computer? Or to redecorate that room in your house?" As the author is right to state, many people are trying to "keep up with the Jonesses" and are envious if their neighboor seems to be living in better financial conditions. The same section tackles the issue of credit card debt, a problem that is quite common is one looks at macro economic figures but a dept that often is doing a lot of damage to people's self-worth. For non-US readers: some of the practical advice is US-centric. I have no use of 401k plans, US divorce and social systems, I don't have to pay taxes in the US, I do not have to save to pay the college or education of my kids, I'll be able to "survive" on my retirement money, etc. (thank god I live in Belgium, and that our social system takes care of all that!) The title is a bit too much hype to my taste. That's why this book lost a star. Yet, there is some thruth in it. Another book that contains similar lessons is "The Millionaire Next Door" by Stanley and Danko. They came to these conclusions by studying millionaires. Their book preesents their findings, whereas Orman's book is more practical. Patrick E.C. Merlevede, MSC -- co-author of "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence"
Rating: - Courage to be Rich will make you rich
Suze Orman has written a excellent book. First, she focuses on the brass tacks for success---the mental state. This is much different and better than other psycho babble books about the mind(one exception is Miracle Power for Infinite Riches by Joseph Murphy) Most people are and stay broke because of what is going on between their ears. Many of the people I come across are either savers, earning less than 10% per year or spendthrifts with overactive lifestyles. Both groups end up broke.Far too many people put control in the hands of other people; brokers, financial planners, insurance agents and investment counselors. Suze puts empahasis on being your own financial planner. Great advice! I've done it and am wealthier as a result.I used to be one of those millions of Americans who couldn't wait for that once per year tax refund and felt so good about getting my own money back (interest free) from the IRS. STUPID!!! Why loan your money interest free to anyone especially the IRS? I don't anymore. That is new found money to invest in mutuals and stocks. I used to be a saver getting those impotent 2%-6% returns in "safe" places like savings accounts, savings bonds and cd's. After reading Courage to be Rich I now have the courage to invest in real investments that actually produce a profit. I also opened a money market mutual fund.I had a whole life insurance policy on myself. After careful examination, I took Suze's advice and dropped the whole life policy and switched to term. I agree 100% with Suze [now] that whole life is a rip off and only makes insurance companies rich. I also contend that most bank products are essentially dead money products (zero% checking, 2%-6& on savings, money market accounts and cd's and are only good investments for the bank, but total ripoffs for the customer.Six months ago, I never would have said that. I was a saver and encouraged banking. I was also broke and just making the bank rich. Not anymore. Now I use a bank cheking account just as a means of transferring money to my funds and securities.I would have liked to have seen more information on investing, perhaps that will come in a future book.Nevertheless, this book turned me around. I also recommend in addition to the aforementioned "Miracle Power", Business Buy the Bible and Wall Street Money Machine. Suze has turned me into a student of personal finance and personal development. I would not recommend books by the self serving Anthony Robbins. People I have talked to who used his system said that results were both "limited" and "temporary".Start with this book. The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom is also a must read. Then Miracle Power and Business Buy The Bible and if you want cash flow, Wall Street Money Machine is excellent.
